Situated in the southeast of the Chengdu Plain, Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province got many pleasant titles in history such as the “City of Hibiscus” and the “City of Brocade” for the famous local brocade weaving. With mild climate and abundant resource and materials, it has won the reputation as the “Famous historical and cultural city”, and toped over other cities of west China in the tourism. It was listed in the “China Excellent Tourism Cities” first approved by the Chinese government.
Chengdu is the cradle of the glorious Shuhan culture. The Jinsha Relic demonstrates that there was the capital of Ancient Shu Kingdom existed 4,000 years ago. Comparing with Zhongyuan culture (the culture of the Central China) in the same period, it shares similarities but meanwhile boasts of its unique style. In the West Han Dynasty, Wen Weng, the governor of Shu started the first official school, the Shishi School in Chengdu. It is the hometown of Sima Xiangru, a famous prose writer in Han Dynasty, Yang Xiong, a litterateur, and Yan Jupin, a Taoist. Myriads of poets and scholars in Tang Dynasty such as the Li Bai, Du Fu, Bai Juyi, Yuan zhen, Gao Shi, Cen Ceng, Liu Yuxi, Zhang Ji, Du Mu, Xue Tao, a famous female poet as well as many litterateurs in Song Dynasty such as the Su Dongpo, Lu You, Huang Tingjian all composed and created large quantity of poems and classics in Chengdu. It is hence endowed with rich cultural heritage. The over 2000-year-old Dujiangyan Irrigation Project was novel in design and advanced in technology to control water without a dam. The city also boasted of many famous historic sites such as The Temple of Marquis Wu, The Thatched Cottage of Du Fu, the Yongling Mausoleum, the Qingyang Temple, the Wangjiang Tower, the Baoguang Temple and the Wenshu Temple etc. The Sichuan cuisine restaurants, the delicious snacks and tea houses can be found everywhere in the city. The Sichuan Opera, the dulcimer and Qingyin (a local ballad-singing) with local feature are heard in the city. The inherited culture of the Ancient Shu is still prospering and fascinating a lot of people in the modern age. Chengdu is also a modern metropolis. Thanks to the Dujiangyan Irrigation Project, Chengdu plain is an important production base for food and economic plants. Excelling in the mechanism, electronics, pharmaceuticals, metallurgy, chemistry and light textile, it has become a new industrial base in China. In addition, its hand-craft industry has a long history. Many handcrafts such as the Shu silk, Shu embroidery; Bamboo & Wooden wares have always enjoyed great popularity both at home and abroad. The flowers, the lawn, and many artistic sculptures are decorating the city and the towering skyscrapers and the row upon row of dwelling houses is enhancing its beauty. The Funanhe River(Jingjiang River)  Projects which has been granted the of UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award, the Tianfu Square, the Computer City, The Commercial & Business Center, bars, cafe, fast-food restaurants as well as rapid transportation and communication has been injecting new stamina and vigor to the ancient city. Chengdu possesses a central position among Chongqing, Lhasa, Xi'an, Kunming, Guilin and other famous tourism cities in southwest China. With convenient transportation in air, railway, and road, it is a transportation conjunction and a tourists transfer center in the West of China. Started from the Chengdu Railway Station, the railways form a convenient net work that links the Hebei Province, the East, south, northwest, southwest and the central region of China; 6 national Highways converge in Chengdu; the Shuangliu International Airport is the fourth largest airport in China with more than 100 domestic and international airlines linking more than 70 cities of large or middle size cities around the world, its passenger flow volume listed the top 5 in China. It is also the one of the 8 communication exchanging centers and among the 9 first-class post service centers. The basic communication facilities such as the post office and telephone booths are available all over the city. Endowed with plenty of natural sceneries and historic and cultural heritages, Chengdu integrates tourism, recreation, entertainment, shopping & commerce and attracts millions of visitors throughout the world. Early in the 19th century, Goodall, a French traveler had highly praised it as the “Oriental Paris” and in the eyes of modern people, it is an alluring city that makes you reluctant to leave.
